Provincial Coldstores Ltd was formed in 1990 to acquire the Old Renwick Road site and buildings formerly used by the Marlborough Lucerne Meal Company.
The late Ian Barnes came up with the idea that the district needed a controlled temperature storage facility and the old lucerne meal factory site could be ideal.
Eighteen local shareholders subscribed sufficient capital for the initial purchase and construction of the first stage development commenced immediately. The company was in operation by the end of November, 1990.
Subsequent stages were completed in 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2017 and 2019. Blast freezers were added in 1991, 2002, 2003 and 2015.
In 1995 demand for apple storage was identified and a room was constructed at Spring Creek. That was followed by construction of controlled temperature rooms in 1997 and 2010, and controlled atmosphere rooms in 1998.
As time moved on, the wine industry continued to expand and many of the region’s orchards were replaced with vineyards.
A computer inventory system was introduced in 2006 and upgraded in 2022, tracking every unit of produce stored across both of our facilities. Automated remote satellite racking was introduced in 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2015, further increasing efficiency for both staff and clients.
Since 2014, we have been using energy-efficient, automated LED lighting, which was the latest in a series of changes made to improve our sustainability. Learn more about this here.
We are continuously inspired by both the landscape we get to call home and the clients we have the pleasure of working with. Our logo, with its cool, blue-green tones, is inspired by our landscape, the extreme variation across temperatures and seasons, and the wonderful produce that ultimately fills our facilities as a result. Our design ethos is also an embodiment of the nature of product storage and preservation.
The best systems and technology in the world would be nothing without a dedicated team that goes the extra mile.
Our Board of Directors is committed to delivering a premium cold storage solution for the Marlborough community. We continuously invest in our employees and our facilities in order to ensure we are consistently delivering and improving on our quality.
While none of the company founders are still in the office, the wealth of knowledge and local expertise provided by them led to the significant and rapid development and growth in developing a first-class facility that meets local demand for frozen, ambient, chilled and controlled atmosphere controlled environments.
The teams on the floor of our facilities, both in the warehouses and the offices can be thanked for the smooth day-to-day running of both our Old Renwick Road and Spring Creek Facilities.
Working under the guidance of general manager Donald Horton and managers Shaun Neal and Brian Yarrall, our teams offer a friendly and efficient service for all clients.
