When it comes to sustainability, we believe it takes a collaborative effort to create change. We are committed to doing our bit for the environment, and have implemented a number of initiatives as a result.
Waste management and recycling We work closely with Waste Management Marlborough to ensure we recycle as much as we can, and we continue searching for new initiatives that will help us to reduce our impact across all aspects of our business. We recycle 200 - 300 cubic metres of plastic each year, along with a smaller amount of cardboard.
LED Lighting
In 2014, we installed environmentally friendly LED lights as part of our Green Logistics strategy. Installed by Digital Light Solutions, the movement-responsive lighting was installed in storerooms throughout our Old Renwick Road facility, reducing our power consumption.
Environmentally sustainable refrigeration
One of the biggest steps we have taken toward a sustainable future was to rethink the refrigerants we were using throughout our facilities. In 1990, our plant was refrigerated entirely with freon, then a widely used option. However, over the next 25 years, it was discovered that freon was harmful to the environment and in 2019, with this new knowledge in mind, we set about transitioning to ammonia refrigerant, a much more efficient option. We have now completed the changeover in nine cool rooms and five blast freezers. The change to ammonia has also resulted in less electricity and water being used at the site.
